"It is my firm conviction that the body, spirit and mind are integrated and I use that philosophy in my dealings with all people. I typically use a cognitive behavioral therapy approach (though feel free to use other very effective remedies) in my work with people at various stages in life--children, teens, adults, couples, families--experiencing a wide range of personal concerns. Depression, work problems, panic attacks, anxiety, impulse control, difficult-to-manage children, drug/alcohol abuse, communication, stress, intrafamily conflict, marital and/or divorce counseling and sports issues are all common problems daily addressed in my office. I also provide a variety of testing services, conduct group therapy and develop and lead workshops and seminars for various organizations. Outside of the counseling setting, I try to spend some free time golfing, boating, woodworking, and serving on committees designed to promote my local community."

"In addition to individual and marriage counseling, I also work as a resource consultant/coordinator for the student or employee at risk. This type of individual has oftentimes been diagnosed with AD/HD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), encountering academic and vocational frustration as well as strained family and social relationships. My goal with each person is to incorporate cutting-edge treatment modalities in helping to identify and remove the roadblocks that may be preventing them from becoming successful and productive citizens in school and in the community. Through teaching, counseling, coaching, and linking with outside professionals trained in alternative medical treatments, I work in partnership with the families, schools and employers to achieve that goal.

"I am a licensed diagnostitican for Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, often known as the Irlen Syndrome. The Irlen technology is a piece of the puzzle in helping students and adults with perceptual and learning difficulties. Some symptoms of SSS include poor comprehension, skipping words or lines when reading, reading slowly or hesitantly, avoiding reading and/or homework altogether, being easily distracted and fidgety, and even experiencing headaches or nausea. (See www.irlen.com.)"

Sheila D. Keene, MS
Licensed Mental Health Counselor #00450
1350 NW 138th Street
Des Moines, IA 50325

I have several years of experience in both the mental health and academic settings, working with people experiencing a wide variety of personal challenges and difficulties--depression, stress, failed relationships, communication deficits, drug/alcohol abuse, self-esteem, etc. Specialized training has been received in the areas of grief therapy (training with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross), lay chaplaincy, hospice, art therapy, crisis intervention, and inner child issues. Additionally, career counseling and outplacement training has allowed me to assist individuals in pursuing their vocational passion(s) and in providing job search techniques, resume assistance and interviewing skills toward that end.
